Immersion Assembly

Walt: use exciting language

As soon as I got to my class my teacher yelled “Line Up” so I quickly jumped into my home class line. Then we started walking to the hall for assembly. Once we got there we had to sit in lines and sit up straight, then our principal was talking to us about our new term topic, and it is Now that’s thinking. I thought that’s a bit weird. But then he he started showing us some wireless technology.

For team 1-3 they are all focusing on kites, how to make them, how to make them go higher and all that, but mainly flight. Then with team 5 they are fixing things that aren’t right around and in our school like making cushions, making a garden with blocks of left over dirt and making more places for bags to go.

Team 4’s topic is “What kinds of technology did Maori use before Pakeha arrived in New Zealand”. All of our fabulous teachers came up with wonderful ideas. There is a lot of history in it, well it’s like we’re thinking backwards into fax machines and things like that. Fax machines are really old but we still have some in parts of New Zealand. People
would have a document and write whatever they wanted, then they would send it to wherever they wanted it to go. It can even travel faster than twelve seconds.

I hope that we learn about waka’s and how they made them, also how they made clothes. I even want to know what type of weapons they used to do hunting. I also want to know how maori acted to when pakeha people came. I don’t know if they were a bit confused of what they look like, they might of thought that their technology was a bit interesting, I have no clue at all but I want to find out.

Overall this term’s topic was interesting I’m very excited to learn about new pieces of technology. Maybe even get to play with some. So I really like this term’s topic and I’m looking forward to all the technology that we are going to be learning about.

Task Description: This term team 4 is learning about what type of technology did Maori people use before pakeha arrived in NZ. So we did this piece of writing to tell people what we want to learn about that relates to the topic.

Eating Crickets

Walt: Engage the reader by using interesting vocabulary.
Have you ever eaten dead crickets before?, and I mean real dead crickets.
I don’t think you have and if you haven't you should try it is scrumptious. Well, today was not a typical Thursday. Mrs Stickland had ordered dead crickets. It had finally arrived. We were going to have our very own Fear Factor.

When Mrs Stickland opened the package I started feeling queasy. Before we started we had some spew supplies just in case somebody didn't feel so good. Luckily we had some chocolate flavoured mud to top it off. When I had my first cricket it was surprisingly really flaky, then I had another. At the end I had eaten 14 dead crickets.
At the end of our experience, it was actually pretty cool. Once in a lifetime I would like to do that again but not any time soon. They were a bit smelly but once you get used to it, it won’t smell that much. So that is the end of our P.E.S Fear Factor.
Task Description: This experience was weird but tasty. I did feel petrified at first but I got over that. Cool experience hope to do it again some day.

Hector Spider vs Roddy Insect

Walt: Write a narrative

One misty morning in a deserted jungle there was an insect and a spider. The insect’s name is Roddy, Roddy is a very quiet insect. He likes to hide in flax bushes when other bugs come near.
He likes his colony but he also likes to wander. Roddy is a camouflage bug. Roddy has horns he
uses them to stun his enemy enough to scare it away. Roddy also likes to eat ants and aphids.
If the enemy looks really scary for Roddy then he will camouflage into something else.

The Spider’s name is Hector, Hector does not like to be nice.
Hector is a jumping spider he likes to jump. He is very colourful, he is green and blue. Hector lives in a rotten stump. He catches his prey by waiting in the stump, and while he waits something yummy is outside. He is a very different subspecies of spider.

Roddy was out looking for food, but he saw Hector and Hector looked very hungry for Roddy. So Roddy tried running but Hector kept jumping along beside him, Hector stopped for a while because he could not see Roddy. Roddy is very lucky for being a camouflage bug. But jumping spiders have great eyesight, so after a couple of minutes Hector spotted Roddy camouflaged into a rose.

So the chase went on Roddy got tired of running so he stopped. Hector had him cornered. But luckily there was a big pray mantis. That jumped down in between them, the pray mantis was facing the jumping spider. Then the pray mantis chased Hector far far away. Roddy lived happily ever after. But unfortunately Hector did not.
VS
Task Description: Today we writ a narrative. We were creating insects and spiders. So we did a narrative about our two bugs versing.

Year 5&6 Camp

Walt: write about our experiences on camp.

Have you ever been on a year 5&6 camp? I think you have, but I know that I have, and I have twice.
I have and we went on camp on Wednesday the 7th of March. We camped on Pt England School Field.

If you have not been on a camp, this paragraph will tell you. A camp has lot’s of cool activities, you usually get to sleep in tents or a dormitory. You get placed in teams, that you stay in for the rest of camp.  The camp will usually last three or four days, which is really cool. We have camps to experience new things. Our camp lasted three days.

My favourite parts in camp was when we did kayaking at Pt England Beach. I really enjoyed it because while we weren’t kayaking we could help the people that were stuck. When it was my turn I chose Ana as my buddy, so we went in a double kayak. It was so fun. I also really liked the movie that we watched on movie night it was called Storks. It was so funny because the small green headed pigeon said “How you like me know”  in a really weird voice. I love that movie.

would like to say a huge thank you to my mum for paying and letting me have that experience.

I would also say a big thank you to the teachers that set up the tents. Also a big thank you to Mr Burt who made this camp happen. Also a huge thank you to all the helpers that cooked our breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I think that all students should have camps at their school. I learnt that performing in front of lot’s of people is not to bad. I would have preferred less people though.  For the kids that to have camps coming up I hope you have a lot of fun!

Task Description: Write about what we did at camp, what happened.

Camp Writing

Walt: We are doing a cool piece of camp writing.

Have you ever been on a camp before? I think you have and so have I, if not you should because camps are so awesome.

I am looking forward to camp because, I like sleeping in the tents and spending some time away from the family. I am also looking forward to camp because I like the activities that we do too, I also like the food that they cook.

I am hoping for the movie that I picked because, I really like it. We had a google form to fill out. We had six different choices for our movie. Here are our choices,
  1. Secret Life Of Pets
  2. Storks
  3. Finding Dory
  4. Pete’s Dragon
  5. Zootopia
  6. The Angry Birds Movie
I picked Pete’s Dragon because it is quite a cool movie, I have watched it before and it wasn’t too bad.

I am nervous about the weather because on the news, the weather forecast did not look so good. I am also nervous because last year on our camp we had to evacuate at 3:00 in the morning, out of our tents. It was a bit funny though because the tents kept falling down and lots of people were tripping over, the ropes and their blankets.

Task Description: We were writing about what we were looking forward to in camp what we are hoping for, and also what we are nervous about.

More Native Birds In Tamaki

Walt: Write Persuasively

Why do you think that we should have more native-birds in Tamaki?. I think that we could still have some Non-native birds, but more Native Birds. I also think that Tamaki needs more birds.

I think Tamaki needs more Silvereye. I think that because their breeding is very is high which means that it’s not threatened. It has different names like Waxeye, Whiteye, Blight bird, and Tauhou. Length is 12 cm and it’s weight is 13 g. So it’s not that big. A Silvereye is a similar species of Bell bird. So I think that it will fit in very nicely in the Tamaki environment.

I also think that Tamaki needs heaps more Kingfisher. Tamaki needs more Kingfisher because it is very pretty and cool and I think everyone knows that. The other names that people call it is New Zealand kingfisher, kōtare, green kingfisher, tree kingfisher and the wood kingfisher. The Kingfisher is a very well-known bird too. It has eight sub-species in Australia. That is a reason why I think that we need this more of this bird in Tamaki.

I think that we need less of the pigeon because it makes a me very angry when you have food and then they come and crowd you. Like they are asking for food. I don’t know why but I’m not a very big fan of any type of pigeon. I think that we also need to clear or move some away so that there is enough room for some Native Birds. That is why I think that we need less of this bird.

Lastly I think that we should have more of the Native Birds. Because I would like to see more of the Native ones then the Non-Native. That is why I think Tamaki needs more Native Birds.

Task Description: This week we have been learning about writing persuasively. So we were writing persuasively through native birds, and why we should have more of the 2 native birds that we picked. Also the Non Native one that we should have less of.

The Race

Walt: write a quality recount.

Have you ever ran in jandals before? Well I bet you haven’t but I have. We had to run on our frosty looking field. I could tell we were going to have a long morning.

Before we went off to the field we had to put our shoes on (even though I was wearing jandals). Next we lined up and we walked to the field. No one even knew what we were going to do. Until Mr Goodwin gave us instructions. I didn't have a clue.

After that he gave us instructions. That sounded scary. Mr Goodwin’s instructions were to run to the goal post and back, and saying that was a big field. I thought that it wouldn’t be that bad but, then I thought I was gonna get real tired.

Finally we started the run. I got tired the first half, but I carried on instead of walking. I even nearly tripped over. Luckily there wasn’t a bull chasing me. When I got back lot’s of the kids were huffing and puffing. Like the Big Bad Wolf. I was too actually. I was a bit gutted that our teacher made us sit on the frosty, wet grass. Lastly we went to the taps for a drink. While I was walking because I was the front leader for the line.

While I was walking because I was the front leader for the line. Mr Goodwin said “Have a drink think how does it make you feel, with the water running down your throat”.  I was like “why would we want to think about that”. I laughed. But then I thought in my mind that it felt refreshing. Overall I thought that it was so tiring. But I if I got use to it then I would do it again but never ever in my life wearing jandals again.

Task Description: This week we have been learning to write a quality introduction and proper recount.

Friday 17 February 2017

What I Did In The Weekends.

Walt: write a recount about our experience.
I went to see my mum in the weekends because I stay with my Nan. I went to New market because that’s where my mum stays. While I was there I was watching the TV and my favourite program was on Kim Of Queens. Once it finished this other program was put on and it was called dance moms. I was like "whaaaaaat!". So I let it slip and watched some I got bored after a while.

So I went for a short walk. While I was walking I saw a college called Dilworth college. They had this huge water slide and they mats to slide down sort of like those mats at parakai springs. I was watching the a little while but then i left. While I was walking I saw a Burmese cat and I even saw these little twins they looked they were two or one.

While I was walking past I found a very pretty flower and the name of it was a Pohutukawa tree flower. I picked a few and then went home. My mum really liked them so i put them in a vase with some water and put them on the living room Table. When I went to look in the cupboard and saw my sister in there looking all crumpled up. So I was like “what are doing in there” and she was like “I’m hiding now get away you're going to give away my hiding spot”.

Then i was like can i play next round and she was like “yep”. So I waited until they finished and then we did coconut coconut crack to see who would be in.

That was what I did In the weekends.

Task Description: I was writing about what I did in the weekends.

Friday 10 February 2017

Tamaki Enviroment

Walt: Make connections across multiple texts.

I am excited for  Te Taio O Tamaki because it’s going to be a very cool experience. Te Taio O Tamaki means the environment of Tamaki. The environment of Tamaki is very important because we have lots of native trees and plants around us.
The native trees and plants are very important to the Tamaki cluster and us because some different species of plants and trees are very pretty like we have the harakeke around there and they like to stay around damp places. It also looks very nice when you do different weaves like flowers with it.

Task Description: This week we have been working on the environment and what native and plants we have around Tamaki.
